Adipose cell biology
Fat/ adipose tissue is an endocrine organ which produces various cytokines and hormones by which it takes part in the regulation of energy homeostasis and appetite regulation. In obesity, fat tissue changes not only in cell size but also in cell composition, secretory function and physical property. Whilst the original function of adipose tissue in humans is to store nutritional fat, the physiological fat compartments become increasingly exhausted in abundance of nutritional fat. Fat then accumulates in vital organs like the liver, heart and muscle where it causes harm.

Our research questions are focusing in particular on:
- obesity-related adipose dysfunction
- influence of increased fat mass on beta cell function
- changes in physical property of obese fat
- influence of fat dysfunction on endothelial cells
- interaction of adipose tissue with gut hormones and appetite regulation
