Clinical Neurobiology

Academic Neurobiology Research is one of the major research themes at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, complementing existing strengths such as the clinical trials unit, cognitive psychology and the oncology network. Neurobiology research at PCMD is disease-oriented with the overall aim of working from bench to bedside. Research is focused on specific disease areas, neurodegeneration especially in MS and motor neuron disease, neuronal migration disorders, cognitive neuroscience and brain tumours. These disease areas represent areas of great medical need and we perform translational work in each disease area. Our research is further underpinned by common underlying basic themes such as cytoskeletal function, cell signalling and cell death. To achieve our goal a variety of model systems including in vitro models and other disease models are employed as well as modern techniques of protein biochemistry and molecular biology to high resolution imaging of live cells. Strong laboratory research is complemented by expertise in designing, conducting and analyzing multicentre clinical trials and epidemiological research in the clinical trials unit. The bench to bedside approach is fundamental to the close collaboration between different institutions across the South West.
