Diabetes Clinical Research and Diabetes Research Networks

The Topic Specific Research Networks, including Diabetes, have been up and running since April 2006. The SW Peninsula Diabetes Local Research Network (LRN) is dispersed across sites in Plymouth, Exeter, Torbay, Truro and Barnstaple to enable clinical research to be carried out. Since its inception the staff have successfully recruited a large number of patients with diabetes and volunteers to take part in studies of new insulin in type 1 diabetes (T1DM) pregnancy, new injectable agents for Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) (also promoting weight loss), as well as academic studies looking at the genetic and environmental causes of diabetes, studies of novel diets in T2DM (DARE) and an investigation of the effect of maternal glucose levels on later diabetes and weight in their offspring (DIPMAB). The DRN staff liaises closely with colleagues in the Primary Care, Comprehensive and other networks both in the SW Peninsula and also neighbouring Western Region. They have opportunities for research training and professional development through the NIHR and the PIs have input into study design as well as their execution. The units at all 5 hospitals are now well established to carry out all types of studies into diabetes.
